Egle was born in the small town of Sale in Victoria, Australia, in 1953. She was the fourth child of her parents, Elena Kabailaite and Vytautas Zizys (Elena had previously been engaged to Jonas Zemaitis in Paris and will be the subject of an LT TV documentary to be screened in 2013).
Her parents moved to Melbourne in 1955 and there, with other families, became part of the Melbourne Lithuanian community. Eglute was a scout, folk dancer and attended Lithuanian Saturday school.
Her father died in 1963 and the family moved to Sydney after her mother married Izidorius Jonaitis (uncle of present environment minister, Vytautas Jonaitis and defence chief, Rimas Jonaitis).
Egle continued with Lithuanian activities and in later life, formed strong links with the Urban Planning School of Vilniaus Gedimino University, where she lectured in 2007 – 2009.
She visits Lithuania every year – her heart is with her family in Australia, but her soul is in Lithuania.
Egle is married to Dr John Garrick, and they have two children. Her older son, Matt Garrick, edits the Arafura Times newspaper based in the Northern Territory (in 2011 he worked on the Baltic Times in Vilnius), and her younger son, Louis Garrick, is the artistic director and co-founder of the Sydney Chamber Opera. Both her children have the greatest respect and fondness for their Lithuanian heritage and both have spent time in Lithuania.
